RCS Business Messaging: what SMS should have been

In this post

RCS — Rich Communication Services — is what SMS should have been. Verified sender name, brand logo, coloured header, images, carousels, quick-reply buttons, read receipts. All inside the phone's native messages app. No app install. No login. It's been a slow rollout, but in 2026 RCS finally works well enough to be worth building on.

What RCS actually is

RCS is a carrier-level upgrade to SMS. When both the sender and the recipient support it, messages travel over IP with rich formatting. When they don't, the same message quietly falls back to SMS. From your side it's a single API call — the fallback is automatic.

The user experience is closer to WhatsApp than to SMS: verified sender, brand colours, tap-to-reply buttons. But it lives in the default messages app, which means zero friction for the recipient.

Where RCS wins

Delivery notifications with a live tracking button. Flight boarding passes with a QR code and a 'View gate' quick reply. Password resets with a big, verified brand header so users know the message is real. Any high-trust, transactional flow benefits from the extra credibility RCS adds.

Because it falls back to SMS gracefully, you can adopt it incrementally — send the same message payload, and each user gets whichever format their device supports.

The catch (there's always a catch)

Coverage. Not every carrier supports RCS Business Messaging yet, and support varies by country. In the US, coverage is now broad across Android and, since 2024, iPhones. In Europe and India, it's growing fast. In some markets you'll still fall back to SMS for a majority of traffic.

Onboarding is also slower than SMS. Getting a verified RCS sender requires brand verification with the carrier aggregators. We handle this for our customers, but budget a couple of weeks.

How to think about RCS in your stack

Treat RCS as a first-class channel with automatic SMS fallback. Send OTPs and short transactional notifications on RCS; users who can't receive it will get SMS transparently, and you get the rich experience for the majority who can. Combined with WhatsApp for longer conversational flows, this is the modern transactional messaging stack.

RCS isn't going to replace WhatsApp or SMS overnight. But for verified, branded, transactional messaging inside the native messages app, it's the closest thing to a genuine upgrade the SMS ecosystem has had in twenty years. It's worth adding to your stack.
